Vino on the Corner

Vino on the Corner

If you’d been in the heart of old Sai Kung Town last Friday night, you’d have found yourself in the midst of a pleasant surprise.  Those in the know – they read Explore’s E-News or stopped by our store to check the location – easily found their way to Appetito’s Italian Wine Tasting night.  A good selection of cheeses, olives and deli meats, in between trying glasses of sparkling, white and reds, tempted the tasters and made for a festive, pre-Christmas atmosphere.  The neighbours were bemused by the buzz on the street corner, and curious passers-by were corralled in, giving them a talking point for their dinner out on the other side of town.  All in all, an enjoyable end to the week that put some of us in the mood for more.

Ng Says Council Snubbed

Ng Says Council Snubbed

Chairman George Ng Sze-fu feels that the Sai Kung District Council (SKDC) was not properly consulted on the wind farm before the environmental impact assessment was approved in August.

Citing a conflict between the proposed Geopark and the wind farm, Ng criticized Hong Kong's first major attempt to convert its electric power to a renewable energy source as ruining the views around the Ninepin Islands.  These Islands off the coast of Sai Kung are just one of the eight sites comprising the HKSAR's Geopark, for which the government is applying to the Ministry of Lands and Resources for designation as a National Geopark.  If the latter is achieved, the government and geoconservation groups anticipate that an application will be made to UNESCO for international status.

CLP assured the Council that it would balance the aims of the wind farm with those of the Geopark and that the two could coexist quite successfully.

Woodland Going Strong

Woodland Going Strong

Woodland School started their new Sai Kung school in early September with one third of the space anticipated - but quite sufficient to begin classes in their renovated space in the Marina Cove Shopping Centre.

Explore reported in late August that their application to the Town Planning Board (TPB)had been turned down.  We now understand that, in fact,  an earlier application for 1/3 of the space was approved and the later application referred to the latter 2/3.  Our apologies to the school for any damage caused by this error.

Smugglers Beware!

Smugglers Beware!

Seven new Medium Patrol Launches (MPLs) started service in Sai Kung Waters on 7 August 09.  They were commissioned in a traditional local ceremony at Joss House Bay.

Police Director of Operations, Koo Sii-hong, said that the new vessels represented a crucial part of the Versatile Maritime Policing Response (VMPR) project.  Advanced day/night camera systems will enhance their capability to see smugglers from afar and the extra speed (up to 45 knots) and advanced navigational equipment will assist them in red-handed arrests.

The complete VMPR project, to be fully implemented in 2010, comprises a Central Command System, two Barge Operating Platforms (BOP), 17 MPLs and 23 Divisional Fast Patrol Crafts (DFPC).  Five MPLs, six DFPCs) and two BOPs were commissioned in April 2008 (see our earlier story for description of the BOPs).

Friendly Driver Wins Again

Friendly Driver Wins Again

It was no surprise to residents throughout the Country Park that Wong Chin-man was nominated two years in a row for Explore’s SK Service Excellence Awards. Not only does he know each of the residents who use the #94 bus but he has a friendly wave for every driver who lives in the park. He holds the bus for those who are rushing to the stop and always waits for cars to pass when going up the steep hills on his route.

Captain Wong was recently honoured with his second KMB outstanding service award. He was cited, not only his exceptional service to the community but also for tipping off the police re. illegal immigrants. Since he knows everyone on his route – unfamiliar faces obviously aroused his suspicions.

Congratulations, Ah-Man!
